The Work That Is Yours Today
A closed room gives Andre a responsibility he can act on and an outcome he cannot command. Consider a truthful next step while uncertainty remains.
Read 2 Chronicles 20:15 NIV within 20:1–22 before this reflection. Jahaziel speaks to Jehoshaphat and Judah in a particular military crisis. The assurance in that account is not a formula for a successful modern event. Andre’s supper is original fiction applying a pattern of dependence, honesty and shared work.
When care becomes a demand for certainty
Andre wants the neighborhood to be welcomed. That is a good desire. Fear adds a demand: if he is a good leader, nobody will be disappointed. He can make calls, communicate facts and respect a building closure. He cannot make every venue available or every neighbor satisfied.
The folder fills because there is work to do. It also fills because activity can postpone an honest sentence: he does not yet have an answer. Naming that limit makes room for other people to prepare with him. It does not immediately provide a room.
Seeking God together
In the wider biblical account, Judah gathers to seek the Lord before the outcome is known. Prayer brings the people’s fear and limits into the open. They listen and act within the particular instruction they receive.
The fictional study group does not announce a new promise about Andre’s supper. Renee asks a smaller, searching question about what he can take responsibility for. Depending on God can include asking a teammate to own a call, receiving a correction, and leaving an unsafe room closed. Those acts do not purchase a favorable result.
A changed plan can still be careful love
Two smaller sittings preserve some company and require more coordination. Postponing with immediate deliveries protects a different set of needs and leaves people missing the gathering. Both plans have limits. Neither is a score for the team’s faith.
Andre can listen to disappointment without trying to make the disappointed person disappear from the story. He can tell the truth, keep the next update realistic, and accept his own need for a meal. The next responsible step is small enough to name, even when tomorrow is not.
Pause and reflect
What are you carrying as though the outcome depends entirely on you?
A next step
Write down one task that belongs to you, one outcome you cannot guarantee, and one specific request for practical help. Complete the task and make the request within 48 hours if that is appropriate to your situation.
A prayer
God, meet us in the limits we would rather hide. Help us tell the truth, receive help, and do the work that belongs to us. Give us patience with outcomes we cannot control. Amen.
